What's it all about
Cottenham lies six and a half miles north of Cambridge, at the foot of the fens. Steeped in farming history & cottage industries, together with a plethora of fine buildings, many of which survive today, Cottenham will delight & enthral you.
Mervyn Haird started his collection of photographs and ephemera of Cottenham over 50 years ago. At the time of his death in 2004, he had amassed a collection of over 3,000 images of Cottenham, covering every aspect of village life. Over 500 street scenes, a detailed photographic history of farming in and around the village, ploughing matches, Cottenham's own industrial revolution, sporting history, the Feast, portraits, weddings, school photographs, Cottenham at War, village outings, the history of Church and Chapel and much, much more. This Archive of Cottenham will delight and enthral you and it is a wonderful legacy to remember the work of Mervyn Haird.
Over 1,750 High Resolution Photographs dating from the 1860s to the present day, are proudly presented here for you to go through at your leisure. They have been sorted in such a way as to be a guided tour of the village. Alternatively you can find photographs from over 100 sub-categories. Each photograph is accompanied by it own narrative and creates an anecdotal history of Cottenham covering the last 150 years and beyond.
More than 4,500 names of all the people known in the photographs have been indexed to aid finding your friends and relatives who lived in the village. Finally, three maps of Cottenham are provided including the 1847 Enclosure Awards Map together with indexed list of over 500 awards. Comparison maps for 1887 and 1903 are also provided.
